Annual 'Birdman' event in Worthing, Sussex.

Object is to jump off structure erected at end of pier, usually (but not always) with home-made wings attachment. Prizes for entrants who glide furthest distance and stay in air longest. Not easy this year as there was only a light wind, if any at all.
Also section for jumping in crazy costumes. Wish I'd caught on camera the pair of chaps in pantomime horse outfit, which split in two in mid-leap - or, rather, mid-drop. (Most of the jumps this year were perpendicular).

(Following pic, left foreground)
"Hey, Mr Wayne! I said 'Birdman'!  And, by the way, take your filthy paws off that lady or I'll tell Boy Wonder who'll get so jealous he's going to zap you just south of your utility belt!"

And finally, a self-portrait on my way home to feed all the pussies:-

  1. Great photos. Such an English day at the beach... everyone fully clothed!

    1. Yes, Mitch - and yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far (and that's probably it for 2012!) but no bare tops as far as I recall . Pity I had to hold the camera myself to take my own photo. If you'd seen me in full you would have been wowed by the sight of me in my colour-co-ordinated tan shorts!

    1. A.M. - on the official web-site I'd hoped there might have been a pic of that horse, but no. It did cause great amusement. (I do so love to hear a mass of people laughing in unison at something totally non-offensive.)

Like Brighton, just a dozen miles east along the coast, Worthing has a pebbly beach - though Bournemouth (the other very popular south coast resort, westward from here) has beautiful sands. I do prefer sand myself.

  3. I read this with the unconscious misinterpretation the object is to jump off the pier with an erection. Oh dear.

    1. That reading says a lot about you, Dr Spo - but if only it had been the case. Would have been worth purchasing a telescopic lens, or even a whole new movie camera, to capture those 'hardy' exhibitionists!

  5. I think 'modest' may be pushing it a bit far, Dr Spo - but worth considering? Absolutely!

  6. I thought this took place in Bugger-Bognor.

As a student (art college, foundation studies) I collected money for deck chairs on that beach, and also worked on an 'end of the pier show'. The things we did for money!!!

    1. I think it USED to be there, C.M. (and there may yet be a smaller one there still), but the 'biggie' is now here. We don't get that many special attractions in this place, being so close to Brighton, so can't be ungrateful for what we DO have.

You used to be in the 'end of the pier show? - or maybe just assisted with it? If the former you really must re-enact your turn on a video to entertain us all!
