Our eternally lovely Doris Day gone.

At 97, the time came. I'll be just one of millions on millions who are feeling bereft. Lovely lady, lovely spirit, she deserves no less than to be canonised immediately. Thank you for making the world ever so much richer, our darling Doris. We worship and bless your memory. XXXXXXXXX. R.I.P.

    1. She must have made secure arrangements for their care, W.Q., and I've no doubt there'll be some kind of long-lasting future legacy towards them too. But such a sad loss to the animal world as well as to us, though she did get one mighty run, bless her.

  2. I am one of millions feeling so very sad and empty this afternoon.

I grew up with her in the 50s and have never forgotten some of her movies, especially "I'll See You In My Dreams" and "On Moonlight Bay".

I'm sure her legacy of helping animals, which I currently support, will continue. How could it not? She had a lot of heartache in her life, but helped those who have no voice.

    1. One of those losses that hits many of us in the gut, Paul. She'll be irreplaceable - and how, despite all the horrible happenings in her life and all those traumas she managed to retain her cheerful poise was itself miraculous. Of course for the likes of you and I her championing of animals care gives her huge extra points. A heart of gold like no other I could name, at least not in my lifetime.

  3. Thank you for letting us know about this, Ray. For some strange reason, I didn't hear about it on the news.
Doris Day was truly one-of-a-kind - - a great lady with genuine talent and a warm heart. She will be missed.

    1. It's like an intrinsic part of who we are has dropped out of us, Jon. Uniquely and indefatigable - when she was knocked down (more times than most of us, and spectacularly too) she always got up and never ever gave in. A shining example to each and every one of us. Will be most sorely missed indeed.

  4. I and my mother were just watching her movies on Mothers Day yesterday too. So I was shocked to hear this on Monday morning.

    1. A life like no other, M.M. Shiningly positive in spite of so very many hard knocks from all directions. We'll ever have the legacy of her films (and songs) which easily bear repeated watchings, but now with a layer of added poignancy. But I do wish she could have stayed on for at least as long as I'm alive, but only in comfort, of course. Much gratitude to her for being around.

  5. I was just wondering about her. Hadn’t gotten around to looking her up to see if there was any news, and then the news came. I loved her movies and TV shows when I was a kid. And loved her even more for her later activism.

    1. She had a mighty long run, Mitch, for which many of those around her will no doubt be especially grateful, nor forgetting all those animals in her care. I'm sure she must have made generous provision for them after her departure. If only there could be a thousand-fold more like she was.

  6. Ray,
This is one of those losses that hurts. I will always remember those Saturday afternoon matinees I used to attend at my local movie theater and seeing her purity in those Fifties musicals. And I always felt a special relationship with Doris because she was the same age as my Mother. Rest In Peace dear sweet woman.

    1. You've captured how we feel in better words than I can manage, Ron. Even for those of us who had mothers to be proud of she was still one that we longed to be our own particular mother. And what a wise way to go - no funeral, no flowers, no commemorative stone, just to vanish. Her memory is all that is needed and will last longer than anything else. The closest we're ever likely to get to having an angel on earth. R.I.P. a million times over.
