Trying to cure my addiction to....American politics

It hit me like a stone yesterday (or like a light pat on Rudy's back), that I'm now spending anything up to eight hours per day watching YouTube videos on the subject - news reports, discussion excerpts, talks, opinions etc, from the more dependable/progressive sites like TYT, RoF, Meidas, Rebel...... + MSNBC, CNN etc. This is just plain c-r-a-z-y! And the cause of my being drawn in like this? The advancing horror of what the U.S.A. could well be like in just a few months time - as though the state U.S. politics is in even now isn't worrying enough! It has not only consumed my days, pushing aside any time I'd otherwise have spent reading, listening to music or watching TV, it's taken over my nights too, with me regularly waking up after maybe two hours sleep only to lay there until perhaps 4.a.m. or later with these thoughts and fears churning over and over without cease.

I'll refrain from mentioning specific issues or personalities as this will only get me (and others, no doubt) worked up all over again.  But I will mention just two differences between American politicians and British (the latter albeit with our own set of foibles) which in less serious times I would be bemused by rather than finding them grating as I do now:-

First, the observation of American politicians (almost exclusively of the 'right') repeatedly to declare themselves as 'Christian' as though it is a badge of honour - and furthermore, as though they expect to be respected for being so! In my 60+ years of being politically aware, that is something I don't ever recall a British politician of any party doing (though Mrs Thatcher did come mighty close to doing so at least a couple of times - but even she never wore it so conspicuously on her sleeve). In matters of 'faith' generally, we might see here the occasional Muslim female Member of Parliament with head covered, or the equally rare male Sikh member in a turban, but these overt signs of faith are never referred to either by the members themselves or, indeed, by anyone else, just as they need not be when not relevant. But to hold up being Christian (and it's always and only Christian, of course!) as a demonstration of one's 'superiority' would be, and should be, simply laughable in any other context, as well as in politics. (Careful now, Ray. Watch your blood pressure!

Another difference is how (again, the American 'right') uses words like 'Socialist' and 'Progressive' as terms of abuse - and expects those they accuse of being so to feel shamed at having such pejorative words aimed at them! Over here even the Conservative Party has long since dropped that ploy as being fruitless, which it is. In fact those of us who do consider ourselves as 'Socialist' take pride in being referred to as such, as Conservatives themselves have long since realised. Moreover, the most extreme word, 'Communist', itself carries very little or no stigma here nowadays, except when referring, say, to the current Chinese and North Korean governments or to Soviet Union days. It's a complete waste of breath for those words to be fired off as insults 'cos they're virtually inapplicable in a British context.

Anyway, having got those two matters off my chest for now, going back to my reason for this blog, I genuinely do fear that unless there's a Deus ex machina moment well before the end of this year, the U.S.A. is going to be firmly in the list of one of the world's most repressive democracies - if we can even continue to call it a 'democracy' at all. If I was a praying man I'd get down on my knees right now to beseech the old man in the sky to let it not turn out so. On second thoughts, as no harm can come of it, taking a knee might not be such a bad idea after all!

And btw: it's now getting on for 4 p.m. here and I've not (yet?) taken even a peep at any YouTube posts today. I'm determined to see the full day through without any such transgression.

  1. You have summed up how I feel and then some on the topic, and I can also agree with being consumed with everything going on. I have to make a serious effort to not read or view news some days, as it is maddening and will drive one insane, with blood pressure shooting up. I am bound to end up a Mad Hatter yet. So, I take certain days out, but then some new bomb drops and starts anew. So some days no tv...just relaxing music.

It is very worrisome for me. Many of the issues I wanted to see action on, those affecting many who are in desperate need, like college forgiveness, more affordable or free basic healthcare, affordable Meds, higher minimum wage, more help and funding for the mentally ill and homeless, and the voting rights. Soon unless you're a millionaire, one will be considered poor soon and will have no means to even live a nice comfy life. I know people working two and three jobs, and still can't make ends meet.

It's bad enough I have to worry what shit the republicans will pull, but now I worry about what the Democrats aren't doing too. Too many corporate politicians on both sides. Yet they both scare you into getting campaign contributions for the elections, then don't deliver. No more money till I get results. I think both sides forget they work for "We the People"

I sure hope you're doing well Raybeard, and as fit as a fiddle as you can be. You and the pussies. Summer treating you well?

    1. If I, as an outsider, feel exasperated, M.M., I can't begin to imagine how it feels for you and those of your persuasion. If I could I'd be thinking seriously of emigrating, obviously not an option for most. And it's all due to just ONE individual who continues to get away scot free, at complete liberty to babble on and on making things yet worse than they already are, hard as that is to contemplate.
Your situation rarely features in the news over here and I really believe that most Brits haven't the foggiest idea of how desperate things have become. Sure, the catastrophic Roe v Wade overturn was reported on, but nothing since. The Dems just sitting back and waiting 'for something 'nice' to happen is likewise never mentioned, even though their inaction only compounds your frustrations. I'm pretty sure that unless something near-impossible occurs I won't be seeing America returning to some semblance of fairness and true democracy in my lifetime - and it grieves me so.

Yes, I'm passably fit, thanks as are the pussies (down to three now - long story). Otherwise no cause to moan. Second eye-cataract removal a week from next Tues. Can't wait for the whole shebang to be done and over with.
Hope you are well. I still try to follow your blogs among all the others. If anything major happens your side I'm sure I'll pick it up there.
      Best wishes.

  2. I'm sure it has to be interesting, looking in from outside this clusterf*ck. I used to be an optimist-- too much, maybe. They've driven that out of me. I really don't see it getting better. Not for a very long time.

    1. I really feel for you, Sadie, and for all my other Blogpals over on your side. Actually for ALL sane Americans, even though you seem to be in a minority, though I'm sure it's not true - maybe 'only' lacking in the essential political power that matters - and at such a time too! My thoughts are ever with you your ilk.

  3. I think you, and we, need to take things in small doses, and realize the most extremist parts of the GOP are the smallest parts. And if we can just get the moderate GOPers to vote Blue or not vote at all, we can make some progress in this country that will make America look like America again and not the White Male Cisgender Christian nation the wingnuts want.

    1. I want to think you're right, Bob, and that's the way it well might happen, though from my distance I fear enormously that the gerrymandering of districts and unreasonable disqualifications of many voters may be so 'successful' that it'll be beyond remedy. I do obviously hope that I'm mistaken, and as you are in the thick of it while I'm just an observer on the outside I'll keep on hoping that your thoughts turn out to be the way things transpire.

  4. Sorry the train wreck the United States has become is causing you angst, too. I haven’t looked at the news today but I know I will and will then go into another depression. It’s an embarrassment — and it’s frightening.

    1. Scary for the entire world, Mitch, and moreso for democracies when hardly any of us realised how easily it could come to this with so much 'popular' support. It's incredible that so many just do not want a democracy so long as they can have someone in power that they themselves like - even worship! Strewth!

  5. Do not watch so much news. I tell many of my patients the human brain is not meant to take in this much trauma 24/7. And it is all geared to our worse fears to get you to watch - and watch the ads. "A strict media diet' is called for. You won't miss anything.

    1. On cutting out, I surprised myself, Dr Spo, yesterday and Sunday at discovering how much time I had available for other things. I could even read all parts of the Sunday paper - first time for several weeks. Can't let the obsession return or it's going to be the end of me!

  6. I can't watch any of it. I've stopped watching all news reports, except for very particular portions of the local news - and then I choose the least biased channel. It's dreadful. And I'm glad the world sees it for what it is... and no, I don't think it's going to get better. This pendulum swing won't be undone as quickly as we would all hope. A lot of old ugly stupid greedy white men need to die off before that happens. Sadly, in there place will be ignorant privileged white conspiracy theory loving maggots. I figure I have twenty good years left... I just am going to spend my savings and then off myself. The planet is going to hell anyway. I have not children. Not my monkey, not my circus.

    1. You're very wise, U. Getting angry when we're unable to do anything to avoid the inevitable gets us nowhere. Maybe you, but definitely I, are unlikely to see any change for the better in our lifetimes. My own fears are as nothing compared to what younger generations will face, not just politically in America, but worldwide with the horrors of climate change, now surely certain as the planet starts to sizzle all over..
In the shorter term I'll try observing your political scene from afar as dispassionately as it's possible to be, (which isn't very much!) but have no doubt at all that a deep sorrow will be uppermost.

  7. The "it will never happen in the US" crowd is unsurprisingly silent as decades old rights are stripped away and a new emboldened white supremacist groups march brazenly open in the streets. What more can we expect from a nation that willingly accepts the massacre of children on a regular basis as normal? Hope is dwindling, my friend....

    1. It's gotten way beyond scary, S/b. Sickeningly so. The whole 'free' world ought to wake up and decry what is happening in America. And if what is going on can occur so quickly and easily in such a major, influential country as yours despite its inbuilt 'checks and balances', just how safe are ANY of us? It's now become less of an imponderable question as to how Hitler managed to get away with what he did. Coming to power on the back of stoking up irrational fears in a gullible, easily swayed population, and the rest follows as inevitably as night follows day. Is there still time and a national will to divert the oncoming mega-catastrophe? I so want to think so, though............

    2. I fear the US population has been conditioned to be ineffective in the face of fascism...they've been taught not to recognize it, to give up their liberties for their own good, and to hate their own citizens. They are ripe and ready for another Hitler, and we have a home grown one to in love with power to care what he's doing.

    3. Yes, it's the notion that anything, ANYthing at all, is better than not only Communism but also plain old Socialism, and if that is Fascism, then so be it. I've said before that it's not the fact that there are crazies who swallow it eagerly - every country has those -- but that there are so MANY of them, enough to take over what powers there are. What's happening in the U.S. now is proof positive that this can happen anywhere on earth. There are no words to express just how frightening things now are. :-(

    1. Right. So which party do you recommend voting for then? Is there a party which not only retains and defends your 'democracy' but actually enhances it?
