Wed. 15th Oct.
Other than that, things are okay, though I'm afraid there'll be a rather large 'downer' at the end of this post - so if you had thoughts of sending me your wishes, though I do know they'd be well-meant, you might prefer to go easy on the 'happy' bit when you read it.
Both pussies, Bobby and Sloopy, now in late middle-age, are in good health though still as hostile to each other as they ever were. Despite the cooler weather every night they both sleep with me, one on each side (Sloopy nestling in the warmth of an arm-pit) making my turning over quite a business, with an occasional soft warning growl of disapproval. But I'd be truly friendless without them.
Now for the 'bad' news.
It's becoming increasingly likely that I'm probably going to have to discontinue this blog, whether just for a time or permanently I can't say. If that time does come I'll do a short post announcing such.
The reason - finance. Yes, it really has become rather grim. With Windows now having withdrawn support for Windows10, and now Microsoft as well, it's becoming riskier, my primitive laptop becoming more vulnerable to hackers. I do have reliable security in Avast, who have never yet let me down though it would be better to have back-up just in case, all of which is disappearing. I wouldn't like others to be put at risk to hackers through me, let alone anyone finding out my bank details, so I think it would be better all round if I at the very least, go into 'suspense'. Frankly, I do badly need a new laptop (this present one is second-hand, won't take Windows11, and has its other very apparent limits). A much-needed new one is, at the moment, way beyond my means. No point in going to such expense for a 'luxury' when I already can barely find enough to buy food and to pay the heating (and other necessary) bills to keep me going through the Winter. So despite my near-smile in the photo above - taken, as I say a fortnight ago - things are not going so well and could yet turn even grimmer.
Wish I didn't have to say it, but there it is.
I'll let you know if things turn up....or go further down.
Thanks for any concern you may have.
Thanks for any concern you may have.

Dear Ray,
ReplyDeleteWe have been away far too long and are very sad to read this post on our return. Things have rarely been easy for you and now it looks quite bleak.
What we have found on our return is a warm welcome from our old Blog chums and it is good to reconnect across the globe. What we do so hope is that you are able to continue since to remain connected is important in life.
We wish you many happy returns of the day and do take the greatest of care.
Many thanks to both of you - and such a nice surprise hearing from you again after all this time.
DeleteNothing much to add on my present circs - which have now lasted , since things started going awry, nearly half my life. Whether this was to be my ultimate destiny, who can say?
I hope to 'speak' to you again before - and IF - I am to 'vanish'.
All the best to you and yours - and whomsoever you also wish to include.
'Bye for now.
So sorry about the financial hell. I wish we had loads to share. But I do wish you a better 80th year with less stress. Sending you love for your birthday.
ReplyDeleteThanks ever so much, Mitch. Greatly appreciated.
DeleteSo sorry to hear that things are so difficult. You will be missed if you have to stop blogging and I think you will miss it too but thank you for keeping us all informed. Sending love and best wishes for your birthday x
ReplyDeleteGrateful thanks to you too, Carol. I most certainly would miss blogpals and their thoughts if it is to come to that, which I'm still hoping like mad it won't. My fingers remain crossed however long it's going to be.
DeleteAll my very best wishes to yoiu.
I completely understand. My computer got hacked last year and it's been a battle. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But please, have a happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteTrying to keep the ol' spirits up, Sadie, though not with much luck so far. Just as well I'm teetotal, with no desire to return there - though drinking, fortunately, had never been a 'problem' for me. I just prefer to keep a clear head.
DeleteAnyway, you, as one who knows what it feels like to having been hacked, are well aware of what a nuisance it can be, so it's a big risk not just for onmeself but for ALL one's contacts - so I don't want to go there.
Thanks for your b/day wish - and I wish you all the best in return.
I think I forget you too are a October baby! I bring up the rear, so to speak, of the month! I will wish you birthday wishes and salutations, and a few birthday hugs! I do wish things will turn around for you. No matter how often one posts, when gone they are missed. If you still use your laptap, you can always feel free to email me. I'd gladly share it with you. You'd be missed in "our gang" And like Lance said, it' s good to have some communication with others, be it in person or otherwise.
ReplyDeleteXOXO
You write very movingly, M.M. and it touches me deeply. It may well not turn out to be what I fear i.e. having to do a disappearing act, so got to keep hoping.
DeleteI would certainly miss your own incredible postings, both the 'saucy' ones and others. Let's hope it just doesn't happen, right?
Xs back to you too!
Well, I will say Happy Birthday and send good thoughts on the blogging situation.
ReplyDeleteGood of you for the message, Bob. Greatly liked and appreciated.
DeleteI'm truly sorry to read of your computer dilemma. I don't often comment, but I very much enjoy your fine writing and erudite views. I hope you find a way to keep blogging. Perhaps a newish (cheaper) reconstructed laptop?
ReplyDeleteWell, thanks very much for that, H. - me, 'erudite'? I'm not so sure the shoes fit but grateful for it anyway.
ReplyDeleteMy most earnest wish would be to acquire a brand NEW top-of-the-range laptop, having had my fill of cost-saving cheapo stuff which quickly run into problems. Not totally impossible if something turns up, but while waiting one can wish, can't one?
Many thanks for your visit here - and please do come back if I'm still around to hear from you.
Al the very best to you.
I wish I knew a solution for your computer woes. I echo everyone else here, Ray, on how much we would miss you if you had to stop blogging. You know how much I appreciate your writing and insights. Wishing you a happy birthday & sending good thoughts, today and always.
ReplyDeleteA thousand thanks for saying that, Elle. It goes to my heart. Hopefully the worst may yet not happen. You'll know before it does - IF it does. Luv to you.
DeleteIt would be a shame to lose your voice. I agree that getting hacked is bad news and is to be avoided. There are some cheaper alternatives to keeping your laptop up to date than getting a new one that can run Windows 11, but these come with tradeoffs too. One helpful website might be https://endof10.org/places/ . You would have to back up your files beforehand and the experience would be different, but it might be worth it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion, Anon, but I'm really a primitive when it comes to the ins and outs of computers and their technicalities - and have no one on hand to ask or to devise me. Nonetheless I'll do what you suggest and see if I can manafe to give it a try. Nothing to lose? - or.....?
DeleteHappiest Day to you. Glad you're healing and hope there is a solution to your security issue. I'd hate to see you close shop.
ReplyDelete'Ta', B. Physically getting better, certainly - though, as you recognise, the non-visible side far less so - but soldier on somehow we must - and WILL!
DeleteHappy birthday all the same! Tasha says, "Woof!"
ReplyDeleteThanx, Walt. Your visit here is always welcome. And please also thank Tasha for me - Woof, woof!
DeleteRay,
ReplyDeleteI have to comment as "Anonymous" because Blogger wants me to accept cookies from your blog which never asked before. I'm Ron from Retired in Delaware. I'm sorry to hear that you may leave the blogger world. I hope you don't but if you do, I wish you the best always! By the way, if you do decided to stay, try and get away from any Windows based products. They're always a headache. I ditched them years ago and haven't had any problems since. Go with Apple, even though they are more expensive. Apple is a closed operating system, Windows is open (so they can make more money by licensing).
I hope things work out well for you Ray. It''s hard to give up blogging. I know, I've tried it. I'm glad kept at it though. The few friends I have now (the rest have died) I met through my blogging, sometimes indirectly but if not for blogging I would never have met them at all and my life would indeed be much lonelier now. Ironically two of my best friends (Pat and Glenn) don't read my blog (not interested) but I met them through my blog. Gotta keep your options open Ray! You never know where that next friend is coming from.
Ron
Hi, Ron. Many thanks for your visit here - and I can promise you that what you say about Apple I am taking VERY seriously indeed. When and IF the time comes, as I desperately hope it will, that I'm able to check out what replacement laptop I should go for, I'll investigate what you recommend - and, I must say, Apple does sound extremely promising. Whether that will be soon or later (if at all!) of course I can't say.
DeleteAt present, with this current laptop I must say that Avast security has been very reliable during the last decade or so that I've been using them - though not exactly 'cheap'. I've had no problems at all. Their daily postings of the number of attempts to hack into my accounts is, frankly, quite frightening, a lot of them originating from sites I've never even heard of, let alone never having visited. (They're more than likely using 'innocent' sites as a kind of Trojan Horse to hide their true intentions).
How much longer Avast can successfully hold things at bay, of course, I can't say, but I feel I should get out at the slightest evidence of things going awry. As I say, I shall attempt to make a posting before I have to make an exit - hopefully long before there's any attempt for someone to use my account here to hack into other bloggers' sites - that would be dreadful.
Good to also hear of your highly positive experiences with friends.
Thanks for your most valuable thoughts, Ron - Keen vigilance must now necessarily be my key words.
Happy Belated, my friend!
ReplyDeleteVery many thanks to you, dearest S/b. It's a sheer pleasure knowing that you've visited here. Please give my hearty greetings - plus a few friendly strokes - to the lovely li'l Harvey too.
