Computer problems - GRRRRRRRR!!!!

Being a bit of an ignoramus when it comes to computer workings, looks like I'm a-gonna have to dip deep into that fortuitous windfall mentioned in my blog of only two days ago and which had so delighted me.
My p.c. has been functioning progressively slower over recent months, with the 'free space' on the disc now down to just 8% - a sudden drastic tumble, for some totally mysterious reason, from the near 70% of only 6 months ago - from where it had been decreasing, it's true, but only very gradually. Despite my downloading three different (free) disk-cleaning and fragmenting devices, as well as buying one for £20, none of them has made any difference at all - while it continues to get slower and s-l-o--w--e---r.
And now, to cap it all, in trying to delete files which I thought weren't needed, I've gone and deleted the means to get sound, any sound, through the speakers - and I'm not savvy enough to know how to recover it, dammit! (I couldn't even listen to Anne Marie's posting today of 'Footloose'! How much worse can it get?)
Oh well, before digging myself into an even deeper hole, looks like the only sensible solution is to get the chappie in who installed it for me 7 years ago - but, of course, he costs money!. As is known, once you've got yourself dependent on a computer, it's awfully hard to get weaned off it.
Well, the longer it's left the more it's going to get to me - no good for the old blood pressure. So, looks like a little telephone call tomorrow morning has to be on the cards. Will try to save my tears at the price until after he's gone.

  1. We're having the same troubles with our computer and just sent it out for a rehaul. I'll have to makedo with a laptop that I loathe!
    GRRRRR!
Glad to know there's another self-professed computer ignormus out there!

    1. Yes, there are more of us hopeless no-knowers than is realised, Bob. I don't have a laptop - nor know anyone close to me whose p.c. I could use, so there's nothing to fall back on, which makes it all even worse. But got to get through it somehow.

  2. know the feeling; we had to replace our desktop in 2008. our first home computer lasted 10 years. a worthwhile investment and yeah, we can't be without them!

    1. Yes, so true, A.M. We were talking about doing without radio and/or TV. I'd definitely prefer to be TV-less than not having a computer - and I'm not even considering watching TV progs on the p.c. It's keeping up with blogs like yours that I'd miss most. (I'll collect my kiss later!)

  3. That seems to be the story of my life, also. Get some extra money and then in a few days, it's used for something totally unexpected. I console myself by saying that at least I had the money to pay for it. Doesn't always work. At least the pussies got a treat and after the computer is fixed, you can have a nice glass of wine to lift your spirits. From what you described, it sounds as if your computer is infected with a virus. Happened twice to me. The nice part was they were able to fix it while I spoke with them on the phone.

    1. Paul, I know it's only a matter of time before there's no alternative to getting it put right once and for all - or rather, once and for a long time. But this morning, as if by magic, a 'Wizard' message appeared (unasked for by me) saying that a new acoustic device is available to be installed, and would I like it? Did I hesitate? No, I did not. I loaded it - and I've now got my sound back! So that alone is some relief.
As for the main problem of slowness, I'm going to try and carry on a little while longer in order to give me more time to build up some funds. I've been used to using the computer while having a book at the ready on the side, for those 'longueurs'. Obviously, can't carry on like this for much longer - but not keen at the moment to splash out monies before I've really GOT to. Whether that time has now arrived, I'll soon find out. Mind you, if yours was fixed by their giving you instructions over the phone, that really sounds ideal. But I will give it just a little while longer.

(Yes, the pussies got THEIR treat - but, for all the thanks I get, it's as though they feel they should have had it anyway!)

    1. If only that was so, Cubby. It took me 2.5 HOURS to get to my blogs this morning. If you were here to have a look at my software AND hardware - and if your assistance was fruitful, I'd be thanking you ON MY KNEES! ;-)
